The Fight of the Centruy
Max Schmeling
vs. Joe Louis

A Musical by
James Edward Lyons
Paul Graham Brown

On the eve of the Second World War, two boxers, Max Schmeling and Joe Louis became symbols for the struggle between fascism and democracy. For the Nazi regime, Schmeling's stunning victory in 1936 was proof of white Aryan surpremacy. 'The Brown bomber' Joe Louis forced Americans to deal with their own long-standing racial prejudices. Louis' first-round victory in their second encounter 1938 made him an American hero.
The Fight of the Century weaves the sounds and rhythms of boxing with political rhythms of the times. The box ring becomes a magnifying glass for the hopes and fears of millions of the verge of an international crisis.
