On the eve of the
Second World War, two boxers, Max Schmeling
and Joe Louis became symbols for the
struggle between fascism and democracy. For the Nazi regime, Schmeling's
stunning victory in 1936 was proof of white Aryan surpremacy. 'The Brown
bomber' Joe Louis forced Americans to deal with their own long-standing
racial prejudices. Louis' first-round victory in their second encounter
1938 made him an American hero.
