A
deserted railroad depot sets the scene for a journey back into the
world and songs of American Country legend Johnny Cash. A rusted freight
car,
a ragged old flag, tracks overgrown with time, and out a dark
tunnel, the aged 'Man in Black'. Along the lines of his legendary
theme-album 'Ride This Train' Cash is on a long ride home, back to
his boyhood roots in the cottonfields of Dyess, Arkansas.
Johnny Cash was a man like America itself: upstanding, righteous and
violent. Raised during the Depression years on rich, black Mississippi
Delta land, Cash always felt himself attracted to the underdogs and
outsiders of this world. His songs mirror his own dark instincts,
burning desires and hidden fears. The long years of drug addiction
as well as a violent, self-destructive vein were the dark sides of
a deeply religious man who demanded justice for all, and searched
to free himself from a self-imposed prison. In the end it was the
relentless love of his wife June Carter, her never-ending battle to
beat the drugs and demons, and her unshakable faith which saved Johnny
Cash from the abyss. This is their story.
