| The Club was founded in the Schenectady home of Mrs. Arthur W. Jones (Elsie) in 1913. She and her friends had Thursday afternoons free. During the week, these women supervised the maids who worked in their upscale homes. On Thursdays, however, the maids had most of the day off, giving the women an opportunity to get together. The activity they chose? Singing, of course! They would meet every Thursday to practice, which lead to "concerts and small measures of artistic fame." Their first performance was given on January 22, 1914 in the ballroom of the Mohawk Golf Club of Schenectady. Since 1931, most concerts have been given in the union College Memorial Chapel in Schnectady. "Even when {WW I} came, we carried on without a break, singing for different organizations to further the war effort," wrote Elsie Jones. Today, the club meets for practice on Wednesday mornings from September through April. For more information, check out our home page |
