Marvin Gabrion on Trial for Murder
The case against Marvin Gabrion is being heard in a Grand Rapids Federal Court. Because the alleged crime took place on federal land, Gabrion could be sentenced to death if he is found guilty.
The body of 19-year-old Rachael Timmerman was discovered in Oxford Lake in July of 1997. She had accused Gabrion of raping her and shortly after was declared missing.
Timmerman's 11-month-old daughter Shannon Verhage was last seen with her mother the day she disappeared. Shannon has been missing ever since that day.
Even though this murder happened almost five years ago, many people who live in the town of Newaygo say they have not forgotten about this brutal murder.
If Gabrion is found guilty he may face the death penalty, something everyone doesn't agree on.
Laura Otte of Sand Lake says, "Who ever did this put some thought into it. I think the death penalty should be an option and I'm very glad that it is." But Patrick Teets of Grant says, "I would favor imprisonment for life verses the death penalty. Actually I think that's more of a harsh punishment than the death penalty."
Their opinions may differ. However, they both want answers.
