CONCLUSION

It appears that our school systems have lagged behind the business world when it comes to creating an equal environment for males and females.  Many schools are caught up in the new standards and Essential Learnings and they are spending their time and money training teachers to work with these new methods.   The gender gap is not just about girls being happy.  Everyone will benefit from a society where people are happy and productive.  All people feel the need to be valued and be reminded that his or her achievements are applauded. In order for future generations to succeed in life, being technology savvy is crucial. According the US Department of Commerce, more than 60% of jobs now require technical skills. (Walker, 2001)

It would be a shame to think that our world has not progressed much more than 1846 when Charlotte Bronte wrote of herself and her sisters Emily and Anne; “… we did not like to declare ourselves women because…we had a vague impression that authoresses are liable to be looked on with prejudice.”  (Foreword from Wuthering Heights)  She was referring of course to the fact that her and her sisters adopted male pen names when they first began their literary careers.
