| Poker Anyone? By A. E. L. Vincent and Catherine strolled through the tunnels towards the library. Catherine paused for a moment and said, "Vincent, he's not going to like it, I am not his most favourite person in the world". Vincent turned to Catherine and assured her, "Catherine, that may have been the case a couple of years ago, but Father loves you like a daughter now". As they neared the library, Catherine took a deep breath and said, "Oh well, here goes, let's get this over with Vincent". As they enter the library, they see Father lost in a pile of old books. Vincent clears his throat a bit. "Ah, Vincent, Catherine, what reason could you possibly have for visiting this straight-laced old foggie tonight?". "Oh my" thought Catherine "straight-laced old foggie". Vincent then began to speak, and stammered "Well...eh..um..we..". Catherine couldn't stand it "Oh for heavens sake Vincent!, Father it's like this...a few weeks ago, when Vincent came Above, my apartment was bathed in flickering candlelight. It put us into such a romantic and wicked mood, and we...Catherine looked into Vincent's entransing eyes...we decided to play a little game..called...strip poker...and well, one thing led to another...and before we knew it...". By this time they were both totally elsewhere, but were soon brought back down to earth as Father gave abeleaguered sigh and started to rant "Romantic evening up Above! playing...god...I can hardly even say the words. "strip poker!", what on earth were you thinking Vincent?". Vincent looked at Father mischievously and said "Father, you don't want to know, it would make your hair curl! " . Catherine intervened, "Oh for goodness sake Father, you have been far too over-protective of Vincent for far too long. He's a grown man, which I can certainly vouch for, and it is time you let him make his own decisions!". Vincent put his arm around Catherine protectively and stated "Catherine is right Father, and I have made a decision which I hope you will be very happy about... actually both of us made this decision". Vincent looked lovingly back to Catherine as he spoke to Father "Catherine and I wish to make a commitment to each other. We would be honoured to have your blessing, and had hoped you would agree to marry us as soon as it can possibly be arranged". Father sat in shocked silence, then let out a wry little smile..." Well, I guess there is no use in trying to change your minds, is there?". Catherine smiled as she looked into Vincent's gorgeous eyes, then assured Father "No Father...not a chance". Father, seeing that these two were on another planet, thinks to himself "strip poker uh?, who'd have thought it?". Then clearing his throat, resignedly he said "Well in that case, it would give me great pleasure to marry you both, as soon as we can get all the arrangements in order. We shall have to call a meeting for tomorrow morning, to spread the word...". Gleefully Catherine hugged Father, and beaming with delight said "Oh thank you Father, it means so much to Vincent and I, to have your blessing". Father struggled up from his seat, and sternly said "Now be off with you both, I have much to ponder, and I want to go and tell Mary the good news tonight, so go...shoo!". Vincent and Catherine quickly complied with Father's wishes, and left the library entwined in each others embrace... Father, looking about the chamber, mutters under his breath, "Strip Poker uh? Now...where on earth did I put that pack of cards!?!" |
