Is square dancing really such good excercise?
Not only is it a great physical excercise but it keeps the mind enjoyably active as well. ( However, to keep it from being just
too healthful, we take breaks to socialize and eat goodies!)
In spite of all this ~ wear comfortable shoes ~ as you will
easily be expending up to 320 calories an hour!
What sort of people are square dancers?
All sorts of people ~ singles, couples, college students, teens and preteens, senior citizens ~ and everyone in between!
As there are Square Dance Clubs in countries all around the world ~ you can now travel almost anywhere and still be able to square dance ~ as the calls are always done in English!
But don't square dancers dress really wierd?
The more traditional attire has certainly been modernized lately.
Men usually wear western cut pants with western-type shirts
Ladies either wear a blouse with a modern "prairie skirt' or they can choose to wear the traditional full skirt with a crinoline. We try to change into clean-soled shoes to protect our dance floors.
New dancers are always urged to just dress comfortably.
I don't have a partner ~ will that be a problem?
Many square dance clubs have single members. Many single women now are choosing to learn to dance the opposite (beaux) position. They find that this way they can usually get to dance a lot more and always can be assured of an unending variety of dance partners!
What on earth is a Tip?
A tip is a square dance made up of 2 parts: The first part is called "patter." It is done so that the caller can give all the dancers a bit of practice on the moves that will be forthcoming in the "singing call." The singing call is the second part of the tip where the caller directs the dancers through a special song. All the ladies will "visit" in turn ~ each of the men in their square. But at the very end ~ each lady will find that ( if it has been done correctly ) she has been magically returned to her original dance partner!
What is Round Dancing?
Round dancing is very similar to ballroom dancing ~ with the exception that all the moves are "cued" for the dancers.
The rounds are usually done between each "tip" & usually the
first 30 minutes of a dance night will be devoted to them.
As the couples always move gracefully around the floor in a
great big anti-clockwise circle ~ they call it "round" dancing!
How much will it cost me to join?
The first few nights are usually free. And after that ~ the dancing usually averages $6 or $7 per night ~ a cheap & fun evening out!
