1750 to 1790 The clothing shown on this site is from our catalog and can be reproduced for you. Bodice with Matching Petticoat. The petticoat has inserts for the false hips with cartridge pleating round about. The Sac Back gown was worn with Panyards (false hips) and was known for the yards of material in the back. The gowns were quickly made for Court over a substantial lining. After a Lady wore the dress one time, the outer dress was removed and another outer layer attached. This way it looked like the Lady had so many outfits that she didn't have to wear one twice.
This Sac Back Gown does not have Panyards. The Jacket is in Cotton, with an attached Stomacher in a contrasting color, and the Petticoat is in Satin.
The dress of the common woman was functional and simple. A Juste au Corps Jacket, with 3/4 sleeves, over a muslin chamise, with a petticoat of three yards or more. The Juste au Corps is a style of dress for the lower classes or working woman, and is a favorite with the Modern Rendezvous Participant to be dressed properly. Several reinactors will add the little things that make this special, a pocket, mob cap, and apron. Another sample of a Jacket and Petticoat
This lighter print is made of linen and has no sleeves on the Jacket.
The Petticoat can be made of various weights and designs of cloth. This example is of wool known in Scotland as "dark stuff". The accessories are a mathcing pocket and drawstring chamise.
The Chamise was the corner stone of 90% of the know fashion in this time frame. Simple, yet functional.
Worn with a corset, a mantalet, or as a Ukranian style gown the simpleness of the working woman's attire makes it easy to reproduce for the Historical Reinactor or Rendezvous Participant.
The separates start at $35 depending on the type of cloth the amount of decoration and hand stitching required. © September 2000 By Lynn
