Lynette Wood Biography

Lynette Wood was raised in southern California and started exhibiting at the renowned Laguna Festival of Arts at 10 years old. She went to Chouinard Art Institute then opened a portrait studio and gallery. After a strong art following in California she moved to Chicago with her family, doing ink studies and advertising art. In 1985 she was painting on the Montmartre in Paris.

Now with an art studio in Connecticut she is doing oil portraits again. Ms. Wood is an award-winning artist and a member of the American Society of Portrait Artists. She takes commissions of oil portraits, figurative work and large ink abstracts for corporate installations.

Ms. Wood's work is on exhibit in New York and in private collections across the United States and Europe.

Says the artist, "The first step in doing a portrait is to spend time studying the subject in life, the tones, coloring, expressions and nuances. I also like to do a photo of the subject or work from an existing one, because the lighting, pose and expression will remain constant. I do many sketches and sometimes even start the painting, then put it aside and start another one. I like working on canvas board because I like a canvas with tooth(sic).

"My work has been compared to that of Alice Neal. I work alla prima in oil, wet-on-wet. Extensive study time plus painting time goes into each portrait. I like painting early in the morning while the light is strong but at times when the mood and the painting is working, I am oblivious to the world and paint on into the night."
