STADIUM OF LIGHT

Home of Sunderland football club (The Blackcats)

Built on the site where Wearmouth colliery used to be, 

The stadium of Light is a futuristic ground which has already undergone extensive expansion in order to give more fans the chance to see the team play.  Demand for tickets has never been so great since the club bounced back to the Premiership in the 1999-2000 season

 

 

 

 

GLASS CENTRE

 

 

An impressive piece of architecture, the building not surprisingly incorporates lots of glass in its design. Visitors can learn about the history  of an industry which dates back to the medieval monks. Visitors can witness how glass was made.

            

 

 

 

 

ST PETER'S CHURCH 

 

    

On the banks of the River Wear at Monkwearmouth, near the city centre is one of the most important sites in early Christian history with its connections to the venerable Bede.

 

 

 

FULWELL MILL

 

 

Recently refurbished and restored to a fully working mill, and open to the public.

Situated on Newcastle Road, Fulwell.

 

 

HYLTON CASTLE

 

Early 15th century castle built by William de Hylton and shaped like a gate-house.  The grounds featured in the program 'Time Team' hosted by Tony Robinson, which revealed evidence of an Elizabethan manor house, which was once attached to the castle.
