Sziget Visit
The Sziget is an annual festival on an island on the Danube in Budapest and takes place every year. There is virtually nothing else to match it and always makes me homesick for the alternativeness of places like Brighton.
It was not the best time I have ever had, it was unusually cold and overcast, I paid the exorbitant price to get in after the person who said they were coming too returned my SMS to say that they were crying off. There were not really any bands I was interested in seeing, I saw a mediocre metal band briefly, and reggae band for whom the sun came out briefly, one or two gypsy outfits. My time was mainly spent in taking the sites and in treating myself to a pina colada but unusually this time round, did not run into a single person I knew.
There was the usual mix of societies laudably promoting tolerance towards other cultures in Hungary, tents full of serious and earnest-looking young people extolling against the evils of alhohol and the 'drog.' However, the atmosphere as ever for the whole day remianed good-natured so maybe this earnest plea for clean living has some positive effects too.
One highlight was watvching a carnival of penny-farthing like bicycles being ridden by characters in burlesque Victorian characters, burning Victorian-style hand fireworks.
So that was it. Now for the gloomy decline into another sombre Autumn of chasing work.
