| R.I.P DEMOCRACY? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Dear supporters, | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I ask you to send copies of this letter and the attached list to your friends elsewhere in Australia, and for them to copy it again to their friends ...and so on, until everyone in Australia knows which federal politicians not to vote for next time around. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The majority of people throughout Australia are outraged over the federal parliament's decision to overturn the NT Rights of the Terminally Ill Act, which allowed the choice of voluntary euthanasia to suffering, adult terminally ill people who wished for it. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Our federal parliament is clearly not representative of the people. For years the community has recognised that many minority groups are under-represented in parliament. Women, for example, who make up 50% of the population are under represented. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Now the vote for the Andrews bill shows that a large majority of people are not represented. Support in the Australian community for voluntary euthanasia is over 75%. And yet our parliament still ignores our wishes. A parliament largely controlled, it seems, by the secretive, powerful Christian(?) fundamentalist group known as the "Lyons Forum" | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| On current indications it may take a number of years to legalise voluntary euthanasia throughout Australia. But one way to help is to make sure we have representative parliaments - at the federal level and within the States and Territories. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Keep those people out of our parliaments who work for their bishops rather than for the people who elected them. Approach party presidents before pre-selection to let them know that their candidate's position on voluntary euthanasia will be a key consideration in how you vote. Ask the candidates to sign a written promise of their support. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| No signature from them - no vote from you. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Please help us keep this issue alive - or our hopes for a more humane and compassionate society will die as certainly and badly as many terminally ill people do. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Thank you for your support. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Paul Keating once derided the senate as "unrepresentative swill". Going on the above, that may be true of the House of Representatives as well. In which case Australian democracy is in bad shape. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
