Life in 1912 was very different to that which we have become accustomed as we reach the end of the century. In our commercialised, mass produced, convenient and sanitised society it is hard to imagine life being any different. Yet abject poverty, hunger and extremes of deprivation brought about by massive unemployment were all features of the world into which Elizabeth Harley was born.
One of four children - and the only one to be born in wedlock - Elizabeth has seen the world develop and change throughout the 1990's. A century which, at its start, had no recognised health or social services and where people lived under the threat of the workhouse. There were no easy handouts; no work meant no money and nothing on the table to eat. This is a story of survival. It is a story which needed to be told and one which provides a fascinating insight into life in the North of England throughout this century.
