Today I saw a hummingbird,
And how it blessed my life,
For one brief, shining moment,
I forgot my stress and strife.
It paused among the hollyhocks
'Til its wings began to hum,
And then it flew beyond the trees
Of cherry, peach and plum.
I thought how delicate this bird...
How fragile, too, is life,
Which comes and goes so quickly,
We're caught up in the strife.
Take time to smell the flowers, friend,
Enjoy each newborn day...
For life lingers like that hummingbird,
Then flies silently away.
