Steve Wong Ka Keung- Picasso Horses (Released in November 2004)
Ratings: ***4
Here comes Ka Keung with a personal album with 7 Cantonese & 4 Mandarin songs.
I was a bit sceptical at first upon getting this album of former Beyond member Wong Ka Keung. It is not that I doubt his capability of composing good songs. But the idea of Paul coming up with a personal album, and now Steve is now doing just exactly the same thing. The last time I bought a Beyond album was their album titled "Sound" which still proves to be the best album for post-Wong Ka Kui era. And I respect thier decision to disband to concentrate on their own music pathway.
First song "Tou Gou", if I am not mistaken, is a tribute to his brother Wong Ka Kui. The lyrics reads "You have the most courage to take up this task. Never retreat. Fighting to the last. I am proud of u". Hearing this song ignites a fire of admiration in me of Wong Ka Kui's contribution to the music industry.
2nd song is just as infectious as the first song. The intro of guitars in the song is very interesting. Midway of the song, Steve experiments with some guitar noise as well. Some sort of like Nirvana but in a more mellow sound.
4th song "Sha Lo Jin Zheung" is another of my favourites. It is a song that u would never thought would be a Steve Wong's composition. It rocks!
5th song "HK Got A Lot of Rich People". Part of the lyrics lines read," the wealth close to million, some admire those who are rich, wishing could be happy, but the ending is sad. Common life is you. You must persist. Search and look upon yourself. Money contaminates u. Contribute to society. Entire life, praise u. HK got a lot of rich people. But dont know how to love. Money is for invest. Wealth not only more than million. Contribution is non of their business." Certainly, a wake-up call to the rich people.
6th song delivers the message of the disadvantages of gambling.
8th song "Yin Wei You Ni" (Because Have You) is a sentimental Mandarin song worth checking out also. Frankly, he sounds better in Cantonese than in Mandarin.
My verdict: Half of the songs in this album are good. Certainly a good effort! Buy this album if you are a fan of Ka Keung.
