Interview with Nan Quan Ma Ma in Malaysia
(Excerpt from the Star Newspapers dated 20 August 2004 by Ll Ee Kee)
This is a long distance phone interview from Taipei prior to their visit to Malaysia.
Nan Quan Ma Ma Profile:
1) All the members are long time friends of Jay Chou.
2) The band was formed a year ago. On Jay Chou's recommendation, they were signed by BMG Taiwan.
3) Jay Chou proposed the name to them.
Gai Rui and Ju Pao had their reservations when the name was proposed.
Gai Rui: We thought it sounded funny. But he (Jay Chou) explained the meaning to us and it was truly the essence of who we are and what our music is about.
It seem unavoidable that NQMM's music would share similarities with Jay Chou's.
Yu Hao: I think his music is less rockish. But we do influence one another.
Do you guys mind being associated with Jay Chou?
Ju Pao: Without him, there will be no NQMM.
Do you think Jay Chou overshadows you guys?
Gai Rui: No. We are friends, who hang out and have fun together. We appreciate all he has done.
How you guys gonna repay him?
NQMM (laugh): Kiss him, wash his clothes.........
The group who pride themselves on contributing to every aspect of the album, agreed that their varying musical tastes have blended well in creating NQMM sound.
Yu Hao: What we compose is different but we have mutual respect for each other's work. I feel that we complement each other. And it makes the music more interesting and colourful.
The lads admitted they are satisfy with the album
Ju Bao: Every song on the record is about who we are and what we stand for, the story of our lives, experiences and feelings. We want to share that with listeners.
As being compared with Taiwanese boy bands, Ju Bao stated that NQMM can sing and compose, something not many can claim to do.
Ju Bao (joked): People will make comparisons. The only thing is we cannot dance. We are thinking of learning so that we can become multi-talented.
Are there any bands you guys see as potential rivals?
Dan Tou: What matters most is that fans like the band. There is no right or wrong. It is an individual choice.
