I am a documentary film producer and a former head of the international news operation at CBS News. In connection with a film I am now producing with German Television (ZDF), I am looking for anybody who served with the 66th Infantry Regiment at Civilian nternment Enclosure #10 at Altenstadt in Southern Bavaria in late 1945 and early 1946. Since my partners and I are now midway through production (I depart for Germany November 21), I'd be particularly grateful if you provided me with whatever help you can provide as soon as possible. To be somewhat more specific: I am hoping to find a member of the 66th CIC Detachment or anybody else who would have had knowledge of an interrogation conducted at CIE #10, Altenstadt, with a certain high-ranking SS officer at the end of December, 1945. Sincerely yours, Ted Landreth (323) 934-6620

I am the grandson of Pfc. Robert N. Jarvis. I am sad to say that he died in March of 1999. I miss him dearly. It is very important that in find someone who knew him during the war. I know that he drove a deuce and a half in Europe, and served in the 530th Anti-Aircraft Artillery attached to the 71st Infantry Division. He also said that he served under George S. Patton in the 3rd Army. Recently I found some pictures of him and his army buddies when they where in basic training in Camp Hulen, Texas. Luckily, there were some names on the back of the pictures. The names are: Jack Smith, Lloyd Trimble, George Marra, George Stevens, Jack Grantham, John Guzzi of Monesson Pa., and a Gerald(no last name) of Clarksburg, W.Va. If you are, or know these people please c ntact me as soon as possible. If you have any information that could help me I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Hello, My name is Michael Baumgardner and I am a History/English student at the University of San Francisco. I am working on a paper for my college writhing course. While the course itself is not specific to history (General Education course) I wanted to take a istorical tract as that is where my interest lay. My assignment for this paper is to interview someone in the community who is a member of a "subculture." San Francisco, as I'm sure you are aware, has many subcultures that have been written about time and again. Since one of my aims in education is to obtain a degree in history (European emphasis) I decided to write about a group who's roll and contribution to history was of interested to myself and would expose my classmates to a community of people who have sha ed their world. I would like to meet and write about participants of in the liberation of the concentration camps as well as the survivors. I would like to interview someone who was a member of the 71st division who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Th s is actually a two-part assignment. The first paper is an interview with limited research. The second paper will be total research paper and include the history of my chosen "subculture." It must be specific to San Francisco and the bay area. If anyone knows of anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area who may be willing to be interviewed or if you could direct my attention to the local chapter (if there is one) of the 71st division association I would be very grateful. Also if anyone has any ideas or know of other units or divisions (I am baffled by military lingo and structure) who's members participated on the liberation of concentration camps and the destruction of Nazi Germany I would again be very grateful. I think you have a great webpage and want to thank you for all of the work you've done on it! I saw a comment in a military website guestbook from a fellow who'd just read that new WWII novel, "THE TRIUMPH AND THE GLORY" and recommended it highly. Alway eager to read about military history, I got a copy from barnesandnoble.com and thought it was just terrific. The novel is a stirring story of courage and dedication to doing what is right, no matter what the cost. I was happy to have been told about th book, so I'm passing on the word whenever I visit a veteran's website. But enough about that, my only suggestion for your page is to add more of the kind of stuff you already have. If something isn't broke it doesn't need fixing. Keep up the good work

My Dad, William R. Moore, was a medic in the 71st. He was from Texas having enlisted in San Antonio and was assigned to the 71st Division. I can't tell you what regiment he was assigned to but I have the map that he had that was drawn by Emil Albrecht and Roland Willie that showed the track of the Division from La Havre, France to Steyr, Austria. I never found out much about what he did or where he went. Only that he was a medic. All he ever said was what a beautiful country Austria was and would like t have seen it without the war. If someone knows anything about him, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you for the great website, you've done a fine job. I recently read an inspiring novel about WWII and just wanted to comment on this Veteran's Day how it reminded me of all of the sacrifices our GI's made during the war. I had to get a copy of the b ok, "The Triumph and the Glory" on amazon.com, because they were sold out here in the Seattle area bookstores. But enough about that, the important thing is to remember all of the men and women who served so nobly in WWII, and SINCE then as well. We owe them a debt of gratitude beyond measure.

Lyle: Finally found the 71st site. Great! My father was with the 71st in WWII. At least, he had the 71st patch on his right shoulder in old photos we have from the end of the war. Apparently he was reassigned to the 1st Infantry Division at the end of the war. He made the Army a career retiring in 1963 at Ft. Riley, KS. From what little I can gather, he was decorated with the Silver Star in fighting around St. Lo, France. But I don't know if that was with the 71st. Is there an official history of th division accessible through he internet? He didn't speak much of the war. Never really discussed the 71st. He did say that at the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge, he was briefly captured, but escaped. I believe he was in an infantry regiment, bu don't know which one. His official military record was consumed by a fire that broke out in the repository in St. Louis some years ago, so no way to trace his history from Korea or WWII. Any direction you can give would be helpful. I am just glad I fo nd this site. Thanks a bunch. Bill Powers

I've been a "websurfer" for years, but only recently directed this activity towards investigating my father's WWII experience. My dad, Capt. Wallace E. Pennington, commanded HQ Co., 3rd Batt., 66th Reg., 71st Inf. Div. He passed away 3 years ago, but I' sure he would have loved to see this website. He didn't talk too much of his wartime experience, but he did preserve some photos, including American and Soviet troops together near Steyr, and also of General Wyman decorating troops in July of '45, when y dad was serving as acting commander (of the 3rd Batt., I believe-the soldiers getting decorated were Col. Denno, Capt. Kaminsky, and Corp. Grenfel). I'd love to hear from anyone who served in my Dad's company, or who might otherwise remember him. I sh uld point out he was from Arkansas and had painted "Traveler" on his jeep, along with two Arkansas razorbacks. Best regards to all! My dad's name was Luther Blankenship. He left us when I was very young, after the war. I met him in 1995, and we had 3 wonderful visits before he died this last March. In one of our visits my father mentioned that he'd been at Ft. McClellan, AL; Ft. Benning, GA; Ft. Meade, MD; Camp Kilmer, NJ; and France, Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. He was in the 71st Division Infantry, Chemical Division. A man by the name of S roud was his buddy in Europe. Dad entered the Army in 1942. His serial number was 33887992. He got out 5-20-1945. If anyone has any knowledge of him, please contact me! I have sent for his military records but have yet to receive them.

My Dad (Thomas W. Muleady) was a 60mm mortarman with the 14th Inf Reg, I Company, possibly D platoon. He is still around, thank goodness and often told us kids his "happy" exploits of the war. When "Ryan" came out, I then realized that he went through so e pretty ugly stuff that he never t lked about. So I would like to thank all you dogfaces for what you have done. As a historian, I'll never forget the job you guys did and make sure no one else forgets. Jack Muleady

(note from the webmaster: Mark sent this email to me and it was so meaningful to us in the 71st, I printed it in its entirety here...)

Dear Friends! My name is Mark Vadasz and I am a 2nd generation holocaust survivor. My father served in the Hungarian army between 1941-1943. When the front collapsed in 1943, he was taken prisoner in the Ucraine and marched to Austria in a forced labour battalion. In the spring of 1944 he reached Mauthausen was transfered to Gusen II an finally ended up in Gunskirchen.
I wish to thank you all of the 71st for saving his life. He loved the US and always talked about those brave Americans who came just in time, specialy a young soldier with tears in his eyes who lifted him up out of the mud and dirt, gave him water and put his jacket around him.
Please excuse my English. I live in Sweden and unfortunately speak English to seldom.
It took long time finding your site, but you have b\all been in my heart since my father began tellng me of his experiences.
The best to you all and thankyou!

Mark Vadasz

The experience of the 71st is truly impressive from a lot of different perspectives. An amazing unit. I'm really glad this page is up.
