| Yup,this arcade classic is back. With improved graphics and sound, it should be still fun to play today, especially since recent arcade revamps such as Pong and Frogger were successful. Unfortunately, this cannot be said for Sinistar Unleashed. Although the graphics are jaw-dropping, the gameplay remains the same-repetitive as ever. Here is how it goes: You are in a spaceship surrounded by an asteroid field and in the middle lies a huge gate. You are supposed to destroy this gate by attacking it with sinibombs. But in order to do that, you need crystals which can be obtained by shooting at the asteroids. At the same time, alien workers are also collecting the same crystals to open the gate.Once the gate is opened, an insect-like huge alien called the sinistar would arrive, which is actually the boss of that level. Sinistars can only be destroyed by sinibombs also. Sounds interesting? That's what I thought at first for the first few levels. After that I just wished that the game will be over soon so that I can uninstall it. With a total of 20 levels of the same gameplay, no wonder PC Gamer (US edition) gave it a measly 55%. Other magazines such as PC Gaming world gave it a recommended rating.(probably they were feeling nostalgic).Though there are also 4 additional mission-based bonus levels in between, they are too difficult even at the medium setting. On the plus side, the techno-music soundtrack is pleasant.Loading time is also fast even on a low specification machine. But even all of this cannot save this game from being mediocre.-LYK |
