| Before there was Descent : FreeSpace, the Space simulation genre was largely dominated by the Wing Commander and the Star Wars series of games. Both of which are popular and even to this day, it is still listed under the top 100 best games of all time by various PC gaming magazines. With so much competition, the makers of descent : freespace have to satisfy not only simulation fans, but also action fans as well. Their previous efforts - the Descent trilogy was set mostly in underground mines and seldom takes place in outer space. So, have they succeeded in establishing themselves with this game ? The answer is yes. After a brief and important traning session, you're off to begin your first assignment. The story begins where you are placed in the middle of a conflict between the human race and an enemy alien race known as the Vasudans. Out of a sudden, an unknown and powerful alien race known as the Shivans have started taking over planets one by one. And this is where you come in. Typical missions include escort missions, protecting cargo and destroying other ships. The missions varies in difficulty and is open-ended, meaning that the outcome of the mission will have an impact on the next mission. It would be better if the game allows you to save your progress after every objective has been completed. Sadly, this feature is not found here and players may find some missions too challenging.( Especially the one where you have to control a Shivan fighter in their base) Overall, if you managed to complete the missions, you'll be treated with some nice cutscenes. Play this if you want to try out your new Force feedback joystick. pros : Engaging storyline, varied missions cons : cannot save anywhere, some tough missions |
