My Eyes Are Open
A little baby cries because he hasnt had anything to eat,
His momma holds her head in her hands and cries in defeat,
The rich stuff their pockets with more than they need,
They watch a child die because their mother was to poor to feed
They count the death toll like its a victory.

Daddy works all day and night and he comes home tired, beat and uptight
The bills keep coming in, threatening to cut off from here on in until you give in.
The gross pay is enough to get your family by
But the government takes a large piece of the pie
And the net pay doesnt even begin to compare to the hours you put in.
So do you pay the bills or feed your family?
Hell they dont care if you go broke and hungry
Because theyre to busy counting their mountain of money.

Mommy has a job and she gets welfare checks from the government
But society looks down on her because of it
She wouldnt be able to feed, clothe and house her family if she didnt.
Then she gets a raise and the government takes away what it pays
Theres not enough money so C.Y.S. threatens to take her kids away.

Society looks at her like shes some kind of a whore
As if her body is a revolving door
But as little girls were taught that we arent worth anything
Unless we are a wife and mother with children on an apron string.

So she goes to one program after another
But theres nothing left for this struggling mother
Because the government cut the funds
Closing down programs that are there to help the poor ones.

The rich are irate because they feel that they should be on section 8!
But they buy and sell the government like it were a piece of garment.
We learn lies from the media were told what to think, feel and buy
Whose country we are at war with and who will choose to kill and die.

And the rich say they give to charities like music halls and libraries
But right down the street is a soup kitchen that feeds the homeless and the hungry
Dont even bother trying to go to their hall or library
Because you need to be worth a couple million to get in.

Knowledge is power, well my eyes are open
But what good is that gonna do
When so many of us dont have a clue
And I could talk till Im blue
Would any one listen to this?
Sometimes I think denial would be bliss.

My neighbor says my mom is paranoid
Why? Because she wants to stay informed
To know where she stands and what to expect
Because shes got a family to protect.
Meanwhile he chooses to stay in the dark
His future is a question mark.
And living a life of contradictory because he told me
That anyone who chooses to be knowledgeable is labeled crazy
And how wrong that is and yet there he goes calling my mom names!
What is up with these head games?
But this is nothing new
Politicians are walking contradictories
Tell us what we want to hear then they get elected
And the exact opposite is what they do.

People start to complain so the government says that the Mexicans are to blame.
But the government gave welfare to the companies to go over seas
Now there arent enough jobs
And the media is feeding the frenzy
Telling us they said that Americans are too lazy.
So the people turn into mobs
And another truth is swept under the rug.

To say anything bad about the president or the government
Is to be judged unpatriotic and met with resistance and even violence
And Im considered psychotic?
What ever happened to the freedom of speech?
And when did the First Amendment become taboo?
Well I heard its up for review
And soon we wont be able to say anything about
you know who.

Listen to me because Im telling you that I am sick of this
apathy!
We have the ability to change this government into what it should be.
Abraham Lincoln said, A Government of the people, by the people, for the people.
This means to me that we have a say over what our government says and does.
Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.
Said by John F. Kennedy, tells me that we have an obligation to make this country better for all citizens.

I believe that if we come together as a whole,
With one voice we can achieve any goal.
And long gone will be the days of
authoritarianism,
But today I think about a better way, a life of
egalitarianism.
So take those principles to your heart and let that be the start.

I've been wanting to write about this for so long time but I couldn't find the words or the rhyme. Then one morning I woke up thinking about the things I learned from the night before, and the first two lines came to me and once I started writing it down it all came out of my head like a river running to the sea.
