OBIT: HARRY SILVIS LYDICK, 76, Succumbs to Short Illness in Hospital here; Long Career of Service to Community, State and Nation.--At the turn of the night when his vitality, seriously impaired by a short critical illness, was further lowered, Harry Silvis Lydick, 76, former member of the Pennsylvania State Legislature, former assistant United States Attorney for the Pittsburgh district and for the past ten years, editorial writer for Indiana Evening Gazette, died in Indiana Hospital. His death came at 12:40 o'clock this morning, the anniversary of his birth. A son of Joseph and Helen (Silvis) Lydick, the father member of a pioneer Indiana County family; the mother from Clinton County, the deceased was born April 23, 1860, in South Mahoning township. He was educated in Glade Run and Dayton Academies and was a teacher in the township schools for a number of years. Later he went to Leadville, Colo., where he engaged in placer mining. He was also present at the opening of the Oklahoma Territory and was employed in the construction of the Oregon Short Line Railroad. From these various experiences he saved sufficient money to enable him to matriculate at the University of Michigan from which he was graduated in the law course. Mr. Lydick began his practice in Pittsburgh in 1886 and later was associated with the law firm of Seward and Frank Thomson, the former, now deceased, later to become a judge of Allegheny County. On August 1, 1909, Mr. Lydick was appointed assistant United States Attorney for the Pittsburgh district, by President Taft and resigned March 1, 1913, with the change of administration. He served with the present Federal Judge Robert M. Gibson as assistant, under John J. Jordan, then Untied States Attorney. He was a member of the State Legislature from Allegheny County during the session of 1907. Mrs. Mary Tuttle, chief clerk of the U. S. Attorney's office, who worked under Mr. Lydick, recalled him as an "expert in real estate," who "made good in naturalization, post office cases and legal work in the selection of postoffice sites." Mr. Lydick was a member of the law department of the Pittsburgh Coal Company until 1917, when he resigned and located in Florida, where he purchased an orange and grapefruit grove. Mrs. Tuttle continued, "Mr. Lydick told me Florida fulfilled a lifelong dream. He used to say he always hoped to sit on a porch in some mild climate, with his wife embroidering at his side, while fruit ripened on trees." He later returned to Indiana County where he operated "Twolick Gardens," a truck and chicken farm, a short distance south of Indiana. He had been connected with the editorial staff of Indiana Evening Gazette for the past ten years. Mr. Lydick was a veteran of the Spanish-American War, in which he saw service. He was a member of the United Spanish War Veterans, formed from Capt. Hunt's Battery B., Pittsburgh. Members of the V. F. W. are invited to attend the funeral services. During his younger years M. Lydick was widely traveled and spoke often of his experiences on three continents--Europe, Africa and South America. The Tax Justice League of Pennsylvania was formed by M. Lydick and he always gave the organization full and unstinted support, both personally and in his editorial writings. Friendly, charitable and social, possessed of a wit and humor peculiarly his own, always seeing the best in his fellow man, his memory will long be fondly cherished by a host of friends and associates On February 11, 1904, Mr. Lydick was united in marriage with Miss Alicia McCaffrey, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel McCaffrey of Pittsburgh, the father being a prominent dealer in grains and feeds for many years. Surviving are his widow; a sister, Miss Virginia Lydick, who lives on the old homestead in South Mahoning township, and a brother, Ernest Lydick, resident of Boulder, California.
