The
God Hephaistos created a woman of the earth and named her Pandora. The Goddesses of
Olympus blessed her with great beauty and allure and draped her with fine clothing. The
only flaw this woman had was her extreme curiosity.
The Gods gifted her to Prometheus' brother Epimetheus. He fell in love with her and
promptly married her. The Gods then gave the happy couple a lovely jar as a wedding
present. They were warned to never open this jar, and it would bring them good fortune.
Months passed and the mysterious jar weighed heavily on Pandoras mind. What was in
the box? It drove her to distraction. Finally she could stand it no longer, and opened the
box! Evil, pain, pestilence, and other horrors flew from the jar, and scattered over the
earth. Pandora threw the lid back on the jar, but it was too late. Man now knew suffering.
But all was not lost, for within the jar there still resides hope for all mankind.
As long as that hope remains, we will never succumb to evil and despair. |
