In the following section will be information that the riders and weyrlings of the Dragon Ryders should know. There will be parts from the Pern novels showing how to behave around your dragon and others', and some rules you should follow or consider when thinking of creating a rider alt. Some of this is also important for current members to know and follow as well.
As is customary of riders, the males that Impress get to contract their names. An example: F'lar, F'nor, M'barak, so on and so forth. It's usually just a few letters. M'barak was, probably, previously Mebarak or something similar to that. It's honorary, showing that you've Impressed. But since there really isn't anything to actually do about that, you just get to put it in your title. When/If the Ryders become official, there might possibly be some way to actually change that. Maybe. Not positive though.
Every rider is found on Search when a clutch (of eggs) is laid. Since there is no clutch (yet), members have been accepted as weyrfolk, or just common people (no dragon) that live with the dragonriders until they Impress some of the unImpressed dragons. Anyways, you will be found on Search when a clutch is layed. You will be brought to the eggs when they begin to hatch. When you Impress a dragonet, you will be considered a weyrling until your dragon is fully grown.
The first few weeks of your dragonet's life, they grow very rapidly. They will tell you they itch, which means their hide is flaking. Slather some sweetoil (or any other kind of oil you wish to use) on the afflicted hide to relieve the itching. You may have to do this several times a day in those first few weeks. You also need to bathe your dragon and feed it.
You can speak to your dragon telepathically (through tells) or just out loud (says). Your dragon will only be able to communicate telepathically (through tells) though. Keep in mind you can only talk to your own dragon unless certain things have been arranged with me, Lyana. You can, however, ask your dragon to relay messages to another dragon to relay to their rider.
Your dragonet won't be strong enough to carry his rider, letalone another person for a little while. Even though they are rather large, that doesn't mean they can carry you! The Weyrlingmaster will help and teach you when the time comes. That also goes for going between.
Roleplay with your dragon. Communicate amongst yourselves and roleplay. You are chosen because of your roleplaying abilities. Don't make me regret choosing you for Impression.
Riders, you are the active member of the pair. Your dragon can't do everything, it's up to you to fill in what they can't do.
You and your dragon are nearly one, sharing feelings and thoughts without words. The bond between the minds of dragonkind and their chosen of mankind is inexplicable. Yes, you can get mad at your dragon, but keep in mind this bond. You'll always love them deep-down. (unconditional love!!) I will not tolerate you abusing your dragon or treating them with ill respect. How would you act standing next to a creature whose eye is larger than your head?
There are several quotes that are helpful in showing the interaction between dragon and lifemate. The flight and hatching are important events for both you and your dragon, both showing how close you get, even just after Hatching.
Dragons revel in the smallest of things. They love to lounge in the sun on a nice slab of stone or in nice, warm sand. Most like the water, so they might ask for baths often. They absolutely love their eye ridges being scratched! And if their hide flakes a bit, they're quick enough to let you know so you can relieve the itch with a quick little scratch and some oil.
