Commish Report

Week 3 - September 14, 2002

I've got this friend… WHOA WHOA WHOA!  Nobody ever said anything about probationary members actually winning anything.  I'm all for sharing the wealth, spreading the joy, the buddy system, inclusion and all that, right up to the point where the new bastard wins.  Fuck that.  UN-ACC-EPT-A-BLE, I say.  Who is this PINE?  I will kick his ass!  I think Beaudin & Pops should have to pony up one-half of the pot for their nominee.  Boy were there really going to be some pissed off people when HamPster Balls was flirting with 9 - 1 yesterday.  The two-man chase after 9 - 1 got me to thinking about records, and how in the first ever week of the LYA, Pops went 8-2 only to lose to G/GFB's 9-1.  The race went to the very end of the Monday night game.  After that week, everyone thought it would be so easy.  You thought that it would take at least 8-2 to win and that 10-0 would happen every few weeks.  You were so young and naïve, but now you know the truth.  So for this week's report I put together a collection of LYA single week records, which I will post here and in the archives.

Mick and HamPster Balls ended up tied at 8-2 this week, but save for good ol' G/GFB and his semi-regular 2-8, this was a good week overall, making the payout (to be shared) only $190.  We actually tied one of the weekly records this week with only one member below .500.  The week firmly put Mick back in front of the lifetime picking standings and got him back on track in this year's doubles category.

Comments on the records:

We've been at this for a total of 28 weeks, sometimes with 8 pickers, sometimes with 9, for a total of 247 person weeks.  Only three times (1%) has someone gone 9-1, and despite Halvorsen's bold attempt in week 1 (which ended at 7-3), no one has ever gone 10-0.  In 247 attempts, no one has gone 0-10 either when actually submitting picks.  Last year, of course, G/GFB failed to submit picks and technically recorded an 0-10.  Two times has someone gone 1-9 when submitting picks.  In that storied first ever week, Pops went 6-0 on college picks and NO ONE HAS DONE IT SINCE.  That's pretty amazing.  Michael and I were with my parents that weekend tracking games on TV and the internet, and my Dad became convinced that Pops was the prognosticator of prognosticators as he hit game after game after game.  It's so very ironic that he didn’t even win the week.  Pops is also the only member to ever record a prefect 4-0 pro week.  Actually, Pops is all over the record book.  Another favorite of mine is that G/GFB has gone 0-2 on doubles 9 times in 28 weeks.  This is actually not unexpected at all given the number of players and weeks, but it just fits that it's him since that bastard is all or nothing.  Last, when confirming that every player had gone 2-0 at some point on doubles, it took a while because when I got to Barfield, I kept looking and looking until I got to the final week of the first year; one more week and Barfield would have gone the first full season with a 2-0 on doubles.  Man does he hate doubles.

Love ya Deano, seeyainaweek!
