As encouraging voluntary work is HYS’s major policy this year, the Community Service department of the SA has taken its first step---they arranged for us to participate in the Dress Casual Day organised by the Community Chest, which is the first time ever in Heep Yunn history.

Dressing casually won’t sound appealing to people until the actual day it happened. The reason why it is special is because the teachers looked at least 3 years younger than usual (not that they’re not young at regular times!) without their serious shirts and ties. Also, “we felt like studying in a university and everybody seemed to be looking better than usual”

Apart from the day itself, we also enjoyed the humour by Ms. V.Chow when talking about the dress codes, “the casual wear includes your top, your pants and your shoes but not your head, so please tie your hair up on that day,” (ed: what about the socks?) and “Please don’t dress too sexily otherwise I’ll be jealous of you and in order to stop my jealousy I will give you an overcoat,”. Fortunately all our girls knew how to behave themselves and nobody aroused Ms Chow’s “jealousy”.

This activity was also a great experience for the SA committee and the class captains of each class. The SA committee members were near to getting dizzy counting the money over and over again (partly because there was too much money there), and the collecting of the donations was practically in chaos. Luckily many class captains were very cooperative and they helped out a lot.

As for the statistics, the whole school summed up a amount of $68748.3 and out of these, 2E won the award for largest amount of donations by a remarkable $11513. 1C won the award for the largest number of donators (286 persons).

All in all, this Dress Casual Day successfully aroused the social consciousness of students by giving them a chance to take part in community services.
