WILDWOOD NINERS GENERAL MEETING MINUTES

FEBRUARY 19, 2008

Captain Joan Madenford opened the meeting at 11:50 AM in the Cedar Room.  She stated that a request for volunteers for the Special Events committees was being circulated and would be posted in the locker room.

If you need a 2008 roster, please see Jan Hill.

Joan read the amended by-law from WNHGA that has been in the works for over a year.  This is the one concerning the members of a nine-hole golf group that may not be a member of an 18-hole group except at a vacation home course where no nine-hole club is available.  This by-law was passed unanimously by a show of hands.

Our locker room refurbishing is underway.  The minutes of the January  29 meeting will be posted in the locker room.  Donations may be made through Citizens Bank in Penn Valley by check, either depositing it in the locker room envelope or by mail to 11362 Pleasant Valley Road, Penn Valley.

We now have a website up and running.  Go to lwwa.org and click on activities and then niners golf.  There will be some changes made in the near future.

Our new assistant pro, Lee Huntley, was introduced.  She is a member of both the LPGA and the PGA and stands ready to help with clinics, group and private lessons, and will be in the pro shop approximately 4-5 days a week.  She can be reached at home at 530-272-4530.

If you do not have the emergency phone number to use when you are out on the golf course, because our cell phones don’t always work out there, please see Joan.

TREASURER:  Joan reported for Jan Wilcock:  Beginning balance is $13,831.73.  Income-$606; Expenses-$863.29.  Ending balance is $13,574.44.

CO-CAPTAIN:  Heidi Estep reported the volunteer sign-up for the Invitational committees was being circulated.  After this meeting, it will be up on the bulletin board.  We were reminded not to add lines or sign up for someone who is not present at this time.  Also, you need to volunteer for something in order to be able to play in the Invitational.  Sally Jones’ rough idea of a poster was being passed around.  The Road to… movies can be rented at All the Best Video in Penn Valley in order to get decorating ideas.  Heidi will meet next month with the committee chairs.  The cost is still $45 and is free to our guests.  Heidi will check and make sure the cost of  food has not gone up, in which case the fee will increase also.

RULES:  Linda Anderson reported for Mary Allred.   Linda reminded us to be sure and wait for players to be off the green before we drive through in our carts.

Last months winners of the rules quiz are Dolly Bergstrom and Nadine Deardorf, both of which were not present.  Their raffle ticket prizes were entered in today’s drawing.

Linda, with Lee Huntley’s help, explained the rule of Lost and Provisional Balls and the quizzes were collected.

TOURNAMENT:  Patti Haney announced the winners of last month’s scramble.  They are:  Dolly Bergstrom, Carolyn Bloom, Janet Garth, and Marilyn Streseman for first place.  They each won $8.  For second place, and $6 each, Beth Biagini, Heidi Estep, Daphne Towns, and Jan Wilcock.  And for third place, $4 each, Jan Christensen, Margie Colburn, Jan Hill, and Pat Queen.

There was only one chip-in for January—Kathy Murphey, hole 7.

Liz Kobayashi is now in charge of the Eclectic Tournament.  There are currently 39 participants.  It is 8 weeks long.  If you X out of a hole on Tuesdays, you are eliminated from the sweeps, but not the Eclectic.  You only play against yourself, hole by hole.  Liz stated it is not too late to enter this worthwhile tournament.

There is one red jacket, size XL, that has been paid for but not picked up.  Please see Liz.

Liz is still collecting for the troops in Iraq and thanked us all for our generosity.  The women troops especially can use feminine wipes, hairclips, blank cards, Triscuits, Goldfish, and Wheat Thins.  No chocolate, please.    Donations can be left in the box in our locker room.

HANDICAP:  Teri Brown reported the most improved golfer for January is Linda Anderson.  Runners-up are Sally Jones and Suzi Poulsen.

MEMBERSHIP:  Sally Jones said that she will hold a refresher course/orientation on March 19 to go over the basics of score-keeping, etiquette, tournaments, etc. for all who are interested.  She will announce the place and time as soon as she knows how many will be attending.  She has compiled a simplified rule book which she will hand out at the refresher course.  There are no new members for January.  Sally also highly recommended the book, Chicken Soup for Golfers.

Lee Huntley said she will also conduct a basic rules seminar, called New Golf Gals,  when the weather is better.  The cost will be around $25.

SUNSHINE:  Sharon Kramer for Judy Goodrich:  Betty Barrows had a heart attack, is now home and feeling better.  Gerry Cosby and Sarah Morgan both have had shoulder surgeries.  Dee Dee Mildbrandt is home from colon surgery and healing well.  Sheri Smith’s husband has pneumonia, and Nancy Smith is in the hospital for tests.  Cards have been sent, but more would be welcome.

February birthdays were honored, and the raffle was held.

Jan Hill reported on the recent Golf Committee meeting.  Subject to LWW Board approval, the  annual fees will be raised to $775 for up to 75 rounds.  Unlimited golf will cost $1,075.  The Niners will be charged only half a round only on Tuesdays.  Nine holes of golf will cost $20 per round; 18 will be $30 per round.  LWW renters, previously not permitted to buy a golf membership, may be able to do so.  Certain forward tees may be built sometime, with the work being done by our in-house staff.

There will be a WNCGA  rules seminar held here on March 26, $17, including breakfast, 9 AM registration, open to all.  Look for the sign-up sheet in the locker room.

Cathy McLendon gave her report on Open Days.  The dates and places are listed in our roster.  She will place the current information on Open Days on our tables and also post it in the locker room.  Players are grouped by handicaps.  Please wear your red shirts.  Cathy does not handle accommodations or carpools.  The information is also usually listed in the TWI, but if not, check our bulletin board.  Please remember to post your score.

Nancy Tipton informed us about Team Play.  Sign-up sheet circulated.  We will play Northridge, Alta Sierra, Rancho Murietta, and Cameron Park.  Everybody sign up for a fun time!

Joan Madenford thanked us all for coming and closed with this thought:  Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by an occasional miracle.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:05 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Janet Watson, Secretary
