Microsoft Speech API (SAPI)

The Microsoft Speech API (SAPI) allows you to write Win32-based applications that use speech recognition and text-to-speech technologies. SAPI is readily available to developers writing in Visual Basic, C/C++, or any other programming language that can access OLE objects directly or through automation. Using SAPI requires Windows 95 or Windows NT and third-party speech engines. Engines must be provided for both speech recognition and text-to-speech. This lesson describes the role of SAPI in providing text-to-speech and speech recognition features in applications.

ActiveX DLLs

Components can run either in-process or out-of-process. An in-process component, also known as an ActiveX DLL, runs in another application's process. The client may be the application or another in-process component that the application is using. All ActiveX controls are in-process components.
