JUNE 2001
JUNE 2
MT. SEYMOUR 3 @ LIGHTNING 3 (6 innings - time limit)
Mt. Seymour scored in the top of the 6th to earn the tie. Watt pitched 5 innings allowing 2 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, 2 beaned batters and 2 earned runs, Schneider pitched the 6th. Brinson hit a triple & a single. Brinson & Schneider recorded an rbi each.
JUNE 3
LIGHTNING 9 @ COQUITLAM 10
What a way to lose, we scored 4 in the top of the 7th to take a 9-6 lead, then in the bottom of the 7th, Coquitlam scores 4 in the bottom of the 7th including stealing home the winning run! Lesson learned...I hope.
Pitching duties were shared by Tolhurst (1st & 2nd), S. Ross (3rd, 4th & 5th) and Brinson (6th & 7th).
Brinson lead the way again offensively with a double and a triple, with 4 rbi's in 2 plate appearances. McFadden is starting to pile on the stats, going 2 for 3 with 2 singles and 2 rbis. We finished 3rd in the District 3 Traveling Team regular season. On to the playoffs.
JUNE 6
LIGHTNING 7 @ BLAINE 0
Wadden (1st, 2nd & 3rd), Vachon (4th & 5th) and Badali (6th & 7th) shared the shutout with only 5 strikeouts between them so the defense did their job nicely.
McFadden & Perran did most of the offensive damage. Perran scored twice, going 3 for 4, McFadden went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, 2 rbis on a double & a triple.
JUNE 9
DISTRICT 3 PLAYOFF GAME
LANGLEY RED SOX 5 @ LIGHTNING 10
Trailing 3-0 until the bottom of the 3rd, the runs started coming with some patience showed at the plate. A lead off single by S. Ross, who then stole 2nd was followed by Ratcliffe's rbi single started the ball rolling. Then a walk to Garisto, a single by Tolhurst and then Watt was beaned with the bases loaded to get the 2nd run of the inning. The 4th inning saw the bases get loaded again with Ratcliffe & Garisto getting an rbi each. The 5th inning 3 runs were scored by utilizing the bats. A single by Wadden, double by T. Ross, single by Parkinson, followed by Ratcliffe's 3rd rbi of the day ended the scoring. S. Ross struggled to find the plate while pitching, but still managed to keep his team in the game, pitching 5 innings. Ratcliffe pitched the 6th and Wadden pitched the 7th.
BELLINGHAM 6 @ LIGHTNING 4
Something about the second game of a double header we just don't like. The boys were flat and listless all afternoon. Wadden & Perran scored 2 runs a piece. Costly errors defensively hurt and were directly responsible for 4 of the runs scored by Bellingham.
JUNE 13
LIGHTNING 7 @ BLAINE 4
Starter Ratcliffe strikes out 3 in 2 innings (2 earned runs), Wadden strikes out 4 including the first 3 batters he faced in 2 innings (0 earned runs) and Brinson closed out the final 3 innings with 6 K's ( 1 earned run), duplicating Wadden's first 3 batters he faced too.
Lead off batter McFadden scores twice on a walk, intentional walk and a single. Parkinson extends his consecutive game hitting streak to 4 since coming back from his injury.
JUNE 14
Game #1 LIGHTNING 1 @ MERIDIAN ANVIL 5
Good double header test for us tonight, 2 - 5 inning games.
Ratcllife scores on McFadden's triple in the 1st, Tolhurst pitches his 3rd complete game this season, 2-1 game until the last inning when the home team scored 3 in the 4th inning. Meridian brought in their fireballer who throws harder than anyone we've faced this season..geez he's got some fastball!
Game #2 - LIGHTNING 6 @ MERIDIAN ANVIL 7
As Yogi Berra used to say, "It ain't over til it's over" really rang true in the 2nd game of the double header. We nursed a 6 - 2 lead into the bottom of the 4th when Anvil scored 5 runs to win it. They brought in Drew the Fireballer part way throught the 2nd inning with 0 out and T. Ross and Watt managed to get the only 2 hits the rest of the way. McFadden had a great at bat to lead off the 3rd against him, he must have fouled off 6 pitches with the count 2 & 2 before and change up got him..great at bat though.
JUNE 16
LIGHTNING 13 @ BELLINGHAM (RENDERS CONSTRUCTION) 2
Scored 8 runs in the 4th inning to blow it open on 8 hits. McFadden continues his hot hitting with 2 triples and a single. Could have been 3 homers if there was a fence. Tolhurst hit a moonshot that was caught about 310' out in center that would have been another dinger. Tolhurst ended up with 3 rbi's as did Brinson. We used 7 different pitchers to give them all a little bit of work. Watt struck out all 3 in the 1st inning, Dayne struck out 1 in the 2nd, Tolhurst struck out the first 2, Brinson struck out 3 of 4, Badali gave up a run but struck out the last 2 he faced, Ratcliffe K'ed 1, S. Ross gave up the other run and struck out 2. All totalled, we gave up 4 hits, walked 2 and struck out 14 and committed no errors. This gives us 3rd place in the PONY League.
JUNE 17
LIGHTNING 1 @ WHALLEY CUBS 10 (2nd Playoff game)
Wadden pitches 4 outstanding shutout innings, lowering his team leading ERA to a measly 1.47. How's the "new" pitch working? Wadden leaves the game tied 0-0 striking out 3, scattering 1 hit an inning without giving up a walk. The Cubs scored 7 in the 5th inning on 3 hits, 2 walks a few timely passed balls/ wild pitches and an defensive error. Three more runs in the 6th sealed the deal. Tolhurst gets the only run on a 6th inning "homer".
Next up Wednesday, a District 3 playoff game followed on Thursday with our 1st PONY league playoff game.
