Anopheles mosquito :- In the world there are more than 3000 species of mosquitoes belonging to 37 genera. Out of which only 15 genera are recorded from India. Out of 37 genera 4 are medically important viz. Anopheles, Aedes, Culex and Mansonia. The diseases transmitted by mosquitoes in India are malaria, filariasis, dengue/dengue haemorrhagic fever and Japanes encephalitis. Malaria in India is transmitted by 9 well known Anopheles species namely A.culicifacies, A. fluviatilis, A minimus, A. stephensi, A. balabacencis, A. philipinensis, annularis, A. varuna, A. sundaicus. The only mosquito transmitt malaria in Mumbai is Anopheles stephensi. Anopheles stiphensi mainly found in urban and sub urban areas. This species breeds in man made habitats such as wells, ground and overhead tanks, cisterns, roof gutters,and other artificial containers. Anopheles mosquito breeds only in clean water sources and not in polluted or contaminated water or on garbage
