CURRICULUM

The Living Well College programs and curriculum have been developed to educate and empower people to make a positive impact on the community.  All LW College for Living classes and programs has been designed to facilitate meaningful, productive, and beneficial community participation for people with developmental disabilities.  Individual student need and real life application is the criteria on which all courses and programs are based.  Demand and enrollment could affect class and program availability.

 

LW REGISTRATION

A registration fee of $25 is required annually from each student. 

NEW STUDENT INFORMATION

Socially appropriate behavior (as defined in the student handbook), suitable for a community setting is mandatory.  Admittance will be determined by our ability to meet the individual needs of a student.

CLASSES AND PROGRAMS

·        Courses can be combined to create a block.  Transportation between courses for those registered in block courses can be arranged in advance by contacting Cathy prior to enrollment.  Transportation will be limited so plan ahead. The Summer Semester will have three four-week sessions.  The first session will run from June 1st through June 24th.  Second session, runs July 5th through July 29th, and the third session runs August 2nd through August 26th.  Students may register for one or all sessions.   

·        Community Discovery, Business Initiatives and Volunteer Courses will be held in various community locations.  A calendar with dates, times and locations of courses students are registered for, will be mailed after registration is received.

Field Trips will be planned each month of the summer session. 

 

School of Community Initiatives

 

LW Volunteers

 

LW Volunteer Groups will meet every week at rotating locations.  During the summer semester, this program will include basic instruction on etiquette when volunteering and exploring various opportunities to volunteer in the Fredericksburg community. Currently LW College is invited to volunteer at Knopp Nursing home and Enchanted Rock State Park.

WE CAN HELP

We Can Help is a collaborative community service project designed to assist non-profit agencies.  Services may include folding and stuffing envelopes for mailings, manning booths for events, and assisting in special service projects.  As agencies have a need, students who wish can participate in these special projects in addition to their other courses.  These projects will be discussed and voted on at Student Council meetings.

 

Community Discovery

The Community Discovery program will connect the students in meaningful ways to many aspects of the Fredericksburg community. Each week the students will visit new places like local music and art venues, government offices, public services, historical and cultural sites, and many more. This program is designed to offer students valuable and usable information about the community, which can be used in their decision making process regarding their personal goals and future. It serves as the foundation for the LW and Community Apprenticeships as well as WE CAN HELP program.

 

Tuition: $20.00 per session

LW Special Services

This popular entrepreneurial project in Austin grew into an important business opportunity for the dedicated students involved. The service was expanded to include typical household errands as well as grocery shopping.

This course in Fredericksburg will first focus on student interests and abilities and may branch into entrepreneurial projects next fall.

 

Required: LW Student Council and enrollment approval from registrar

School of Personal Growth

LW Distinctive Classes

 

LW Student Council

A student forum to discuss ideas, practice listening skills, and put debate techniques to use.  Each student has opportunities to voice his/her ideas regarding the future of LW College and We Can Help Projects.  Participation in this monthly meeting is required for all LW programs and classes.

Physical Excellence

Physical Excellence 1

Beginning level exercise program includes aerobics, swimming, walking, recreational sports, and fun and games developed by Shea Tindall.  Emphasis is put on building stamina and forming healthy habits, but fun is the priority.  

 

Tuition: $15 per section/ per session

Cooking Class

Cooking 1

In this beginning level food preparation class the emphasis is on responsible independent skills.  Healthy food choices and general kitchen safety will be a continuing priority. Students will prepare and eat a recipe at each class. Students will get to take home recipes and show their family they can cook!  Guest chefs may visit!

Communication 101

Students will learn through fun games and role-playing, appropriate social behavior including body language, conversation, and gestures.

Academic Block Classes

A diverse range of needs and abilities are met in an inclusive environment with this innovative individualized ability based module approach. Each module will include reading, writing, money math, and computer work. Small groups of interested students will be involved in LW College projects such as the newsletter and other publications.  Public speaking, and journaling will be periodically included in this block. Emphasis is put on real life application and personal enjoyment.

The Arts

Expressive Arts with Shea Tindall offers a wide variety of opportunities to explore and express your creativity.  Units that will be covered range from painting to stitching to making Indian pottery.

Scrapbooking will offer students an opportunity to use their creative talents to preserve and tell a story with their photos.  Students will complete a scrapbook to keep.
