| Pipes and Jet kits, are they worth the money? |
| Before your go and fork out your hard earned cash on a full pipe and jet kit consider this. How much performance are really going to gain? Do you have any idea? What will it cost? Will any other mods need to be done such as modifying the air box. Or, on fuel injected bikes, re-mapping the computer? How much will dyno time cost to dial it in right? Well, I didn't, until one of our assocciates had his bike done. Our assocciate set out with Eleven Hundred hard earned dollars in his hand. His quest: the all important search for HORSE POWER. He started off with his bone stock 99 Katana 750. Suzuki claims it to have 90 horse power from the factory, which on the dyno came out to 80 Rear Wheel Horse Power (RWHP). His mods include: 1-Yosh Full RS-3 Pipe, so it is not deafening, just great sounding 2-Stage 1 jet kit, it is his daily commuter 3-14-tooth front replacing the stock 15-tooth 4-120-17Michelin Pilot sport to replace the 120-17 stock touring tire 5-170-17Michelin Pilot sport to replace the 150-17 stock touring tire All work was performed by RACER'S EDGE in Las Vegas. The end result: Our assocciates Katana went from 80 RWHP to 86 RWHP. According to Dale, owner of RACER'S EDGE, this is a typical gain of this style bike. While 6 HP may not seem like much, that is nearly a 10% gain in real horsepower not advertised. Together with the sprocket change, and tires it feels, sounds and handles like a completely different bike. Was it money well spent? Our assocciate thinks so, and isn't that what really matters? Not what other people think, but what you think? After-all, it's your bike, NOT THEIR'S. |
