Guide To Interpreting Norfolk Southern Symbols
Norfolk Southern's train symbols are sometimes confusing and are often without rhyme or reason. Recently, the 'symbol-makers' have been trying to better align opposite trains with close symbols, however some do not coincide in any manner.
NS symbols are reported as follows:
| Symbol | Route Code | Date | ||
| | | | | | | ||
| 41M | - | B3 | - | 15 |
The symbol is the train's own distinct reporting code. Each train is issued a symbol, for the purposes of tracking, marketing, and communicating with dispatchers and other personnel.
The route code is line specific. Each segment of the train's routing is assigned a route code, generally following the crew assignment pools for that particular area. Certain crews may fall under the 'B3' assignment in this case. This signifies a particular route that the train is using, for example, the 'H1' code is used to signify trains operating between Harrisburg, PA and Hagerstown, MD.
The date is self-explanatory, indicating the date of origin of the train, not necessarily the current day's date.
