How Do We Keep Our Novice Meetings From Being Too Technical?

This is a continuing problem.  A person very new to computers needs a level of instruction that is very basic and non-technical.  However, they quickly move beyond that, as they gain knowledge.

One method we have used is to follow the topics for the evening and be sure to cover all of them.  They are written to address the true beginner.

This can get boring for anyone with a bit more computer knowledge, so we have to add some talk that is a little more advanced also.

When people complain to us that our instruction is "going right over their heads", we can certainly sympathize.  The best advice we can offer is "don't give up".  Keep coming to meetings, and gradually the instruction will make more sense.  No one can possibly comprehend it all the first time.  Let it soak in over time.

When we first started getting into computers, we subscribed to four PC-related magazines, and read all we could.  Much of it we did not understand.  Then slowly things started to "click" and we understood more and more.
