| The following is a collection of books that I have read and enjoyed, in alphabetical order. | ||||||||
| Anthem by Ayn Rand - O! How I love this book! Some may say it's some kind of crazy rip off of 1984 but I think not. Read it! Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury - I hate to say it, considering it was the book I read for my summer English project, but it was quite enjoyable. I dislike how phony some of the characters were, but hey, it was set in 1928. People generally were phony back then. East of Eden by John Steinbeck - I loved this book so much. It was amazing. From the characters to the literary aspets of it, to just the fact that it was a great story, all around wonderful book. I highly recommend it. Be prepared though, some editions of it range from 650 to 700 pages. No Exit by Sartre - Actually not a "book" per se, it's a 50 page play. It has a nice twist to the end, and it was quite amusing. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck - Another great Steinbeck novel. Even the movie of this was good. I absolutely loved this book. It's a definite tear jerker, though, and one must get past Steinbeck's trend of letting the reader now of the characters' "hillbilly-ness" through the words they use. Slaughter-house Five by Kurt Vonnegut - This I read recently, in June I believe. A very interesting book, to say the least, but a quick and fun read. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath - I could rave on about this book for days. It's sort of an autobiography of Plath's, similar to Dickens' David Copperfield. The reader might face a little boredom in the beginning, but it picks up. Such a hauntingly beautiful book. This one I also recommend. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger - I'm sure all of you out there in computer land have read this book, so I don't have to explain why or how it's so great. But it is. And if you haven't read it, I think you ought to. The Lord of the Flies by William Golding - Oh wow. This book was really really really good. A definite recommendation. The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail (Or Prison, I don't remember) by Robert E. Lee - An interesting play written about Henry David Thoreau. If you are an idiot, like I, and do not know who Thoreau is before you read it, it is mildly confusing. Especially when you discover that one of the characters' full name is Ralph Waldo Emmerson and begin to think the writer lacks creativity. The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinksi - This book was absolutely amazing. It's about this boy growing up in Russia and just how he moves from place to place, living with different people, and the strange atrocities he witnesses. Great read. I recommend it. The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare - For those of you movie watchers, yes, it is what 10 Things I Hate About You was adapted from. This is pretty much my favorite Shakespeare piece. The Stranger by Albert Camus - Some may describe it as boring and weird (my mother), but I love it. I've read it about three times. |
