The Furnessia was launched on October 19, 1880 for the Barrow Steamship Company. She was originally built with 2 funnels and 2 masts. She made her maiden voyage on February 17, 1881 from Glasgow-Moville,Ireland-New York. On April 5, 1883 she made her final voyage from Glasgow-Moville-New York after 21 round voyages. On May 9, 1883 she was transferred to the Liverpool-Queenstown-New York run. On November 1, 1883 the Furnessia made her final voyage on the Liverpool-Queenstown-New York service after 6 round voyages. On December 7, 1883 she resumed the Glasgow-Moville-New York service. In 1891 she was refitted with triple expansion engines and her funnels reduced to one. On November 17, 1893 she was transferred to the Anchor Line. In 1909 her passenger accommodation was modified to 1st and 3rd class only. On August 12, 1911 the Furnessia made her final voyage from Glasgow-Moville-New York and back to Glasgow. On November 22 she was scrapped at Barrow.
