The California was launched on April 17, 1923 and completed on August 14, 1923. She made her maiden voyage on August 26, 1923 from Glasgow to New York. In 1929 her passenger accommodation was changed to 206-Cabin Class, 440-Tourist, 485-3rd Class. In September 1939 the California entered service as an Armed Merchant Cruiser. During 1942 she was used as troop transport. On July 11, 1943 while sailing in convoy west of Oporto, the California was attacked by German aircraft. The ship caught fire and had to be abandoned. 46 dead.
