The Assyria was originally launched as the Ypiranga for the Hamburg American Line on May 3, 1908. She made her maiden voyage on March 15, 1911 from Hamburg to Philadelphia. In 1919 the Ypiranga was surrendered to Great Britain. In January 1921 she was purchased from Ministry of Shipping to Anchor Line and renamed Assyria. Her passenger accommodation was changed to: 241-Cabin Class, 140-3rd Class. Her first voyage as the Assyria was from Liverpool to Bombay. On June 7, 1921 she made her first voyage from Glasgow to New York. On August 15, 1925 she made her last voyage on the Glasgow to New York service. She was then transferred to the Bombay service. On December 21, 1929 she was sold to Cia Colonialde Navegacao and renamed Colonial. In September 1950 she was sold to British Iron and Steel Corporation and towed to Scotland. On September 17, 1950 she was stranded near Campbeltown, Kintyre and then scrapped on site.
