This shot of the rear of the Tiger shows the two large Fiefel air cleaning units at the top left and right of the tank. These are a hallmark of the early production model, later experience in the field was to prove them very vulnerable to damage and also, unnecessary in all but the most dusty and hot climes. As a result, these were deleted from the mid and late production models. Also visible in this view is the crank shaft for the inertia starter , a fallback should the engine refuse to start electrically . And on the right side above the mudguard, you can see the jack. This shot also demonstrates the great width of the Tigers battle tracks. These were put on prior to combat and gave the Tiger a much improved ground pressure. Whilst being transported, the Tiger would remove its outer set of wheels and don its transport tracks, much narrower than the combat tracks, in order for it board the tank transporters of the Reichsbahn, the German railway service.
