| This Portside view of the Sturmtiger gives a good impression of the size and thickness of the massive superstructure. The armor of this construction was very thick ( some 150mm thick on the frontal glacis ) and angled to good effect, making this beast a hard target. Clearly visible in this view is the Henschel running gear found on the King Tiger and the Later production models of the Tiger tank. On a modelling note, the skirts are metal, from the Eduard etched set for this model and I think look far better than the plastic ones provided with the kit, as you can deform and warp them to simulate combat wear ( very difficult with solid plastic skirts!!). Also visible in this view is the single Bosch headlight placed on the port side of the tank , and of course the enormous rocket mortar itself in its rounded housing. Finally, the large rounded plates on the side of the superstructure are actually firing ports for the crew to use small arms in close combat, these were closed by the simple expedient of pulling a length of chain attatched to these thick armored plugs. |
