| This birds eye view of the top of the Sturmtiger shows the real business end of this awesome machine. Sat on the loading cradle withing the fighting compartment, you can see one of the huge green rounds of the rocket mortar in the loading postion, about to be rolled into the breech. These terrible weapons came in two varieties, a high explosive and an armor piercing round. The armor piercing round was designed to penetrate ultra thick concrete emplacements and level them. the shells themselves are roughly the size of an average man!!!, so you can appreciate the actual size of the vehicle from looking at the round in situ. Also of interest is the special two part loading hatch on the roof, through which the tank was stocked with shells using its special derrick, visible on the starboard side. Yoi can also see an armored periscope mount to the left of the hatch, and the ventilation twoer to the right fore of the hatch. In the rear of the super structure is another hatch, large enough for crew access or shell handling if required. |
