| This frontal View of the Sturmtiger clearly shows the enormously thick armored glacis of the superstructure and the huge main armament. To the right of the rocket projector sits a ball mounted mg 34 and to the left the observation slits for the driver. Note the multiple exhaust vents around the barrel of the main armament, as stated in the main page these were used to vent the exhaust fumes of the rocket projectile and mitigate the vast recoil of the weapon. Other points of interest are the wide battle tracks, as per normal Tiger 1`s and the steel wheel Henschel running gear, as found on the King Tiger and used on this tank and later production Tigers. Just visible in the background is the derrick used to hoist the massive shells for the main armament into the fighting compartment, a special hatch being placed in the roof to facilitate this. Finally, the heavy duty towing points found on the standard Tiger are visible ( or one is ) at the fore of the glacis. This tank was very heavy with all the comensurate problems in recovery and towing experienced by the other members of the Tiger Family. |
