After Xghajra's draw on Saturday, this match was to be a great chance for both teams to reduce the gap between them and Xghajra. However, after this draw our chances of gaining promotion are now remote, although our direct encounter with Xghajra can be the last chance.
The match started with quite a fast pace and after Mangion's header went wide, we went ahead in the 17th minute with a goal by John Stivala. Stivala scored after he had his header parried by the Lija keeper. However, our lead lasted only a few minutes caused Lija equalised by Christian Micallef.
The second half started actionful. After just one minute, Lija acquired a penalty after a foul by Reuben Cini. Poumpalov missed from the penalty-spot and 5 minutes later they had Degiorgio sent off after retaliation on Mark Galea. This made us go on the offensive but the closest with got was from a shot by Liam Mangion which hit the crossbar. Although we attacked for long streches we didn't manage to get the much needed winning goal and we also had Peter Gatt being sent off in the last minute. We also managed to escape from defeat in the last minute after Lanzon missed a sitter infront of our goal.
