Originally livestock keeping took place in a very small scale, as purely subsistence agriculture. With the increasing demand of meat livestock farming became extremly commercialised. Especially chicken and pig farms are highly commercialised enterprises, which are also regionally concentrated. The locations are usually found near the bigger cities Nicosia and Larnaka with good road access, nearby slaughter facilities, and minimum distances to wholesale markets and other distributers.
