About CIDA

CIDA, the Canadian International Development Agency, is a federal agency, which is responsible for most of Canada's International Development Cooperation. CIDA supports projects in more than 100 countries. CIDA provides assistance to developin countries through the following four programmes:

1. Bilateral programme

2. Multilateral programme

3.Partnership prgramme


Major Objectives

The main purpose of Canadian Official Development Assistance is to:


To achieve these goals, the Canadian development programme concentrates on the follwing six priorities:

Basic human needs support of primary health care, basic education, family planning, nutrition, water and sanitation, and shelter
Women in development support the full participation of women as equal partners in the sustainable development of their societies
Infrastructure services to help developing countries deliver environmentally sound infrastructure services, for instance rural electricity, roads, telecommunications, clean water and sanitation, with an emphasis on poorer groups and building local capacity
Human right, democratic development and good governance to increase respect for human rights, including children's rights, to promote democracy and better governance, to strenghen the components of civil society, such as civic organiyations and trade unions, and to ensure the safety of the individual
Private sector development to promote sustained and equitable economic growth by supporting private sector development in developing countries
The environment to help developing countries to protect thier environment and to contribute to addressing global and regional issues

Project Funding

Funding is mainly provided through goods and services contracts or contribution agreements. Bilateral assistance may also include food aid and lines of credit.

The Industrial Cooperation Programme, INC:

Through the INC prgramme CIDA provides financial support to facilitate the formation of collaborative venture between Canadian firms and counterparts in developing countries. To be eligible for funding, projects must encourage social and economic development in the developing country.
