I would like to stress the importance in
making sure your pet is tested for FeLV/FIV.
These diseases are fatal to cats and
hard to recognize in an early stage
unless tested by your veterinarian.
FeLV
is the most common cause of deaths
and serious injury to the domestic cat.
It is a breakdown in the immune system
that leaves them suseptable to many diseases
which they normally would be able to fight off...
FeLV can be transmitted through mucus membranes
or saliva. It is also possible to be passed
from urine or feces of an infected cat.
It develops in the lymph tissue which
is your cats first system of immune defense.
Some cats immune systems can respond and defeat
the virus at an early stage, but if
the immune system does not respond,
the virus will then move into bone marrow,
where red and white blood cells are produced.
This causes the immune system to
breakdown in several stages.
To date there isn't any cure.
FIV
This is a neurologic disease.
Abnormalities include depression,
social withdrawal, persistent staring
and inappropriate elimination.
Abnormal impulse transmission through
the spinal chord is the
most consistent abnormality detected.
In cats with advanced FIV,
neurologic abnormalities including
immunodeficiency and weight loss
seem to occur most often.
At present, an effective treatment
for FIV has not been developed.
If your cat has been checked for this
virus and is not infected,
the best defense in keeping your cat from
being exposed to this virus in the future,
is to keep him/her indoors.

Until next time...
Best regards
