Business When choosing a course of study - a certificate, diploma or degree in fashion & design - check if it has a business component. Knowledge of managing & marketing is an essential part of the industry, especially if you want to set up your own label. It helps to have reached at least 6th form Certificate level in maths, English, art, technical drawing, clothing & textiles & accounting. Experience in the clothing industry, fabric/fashion sales, & colour or design work are also bonuses. On The Job Apart from being a fashion designer, you can find work as a clothing marker/cutter, clothing pattern maker, factory worker, machinist, sewing machine mechanic, production supervisor/manager, tailor or dressmaker. A fashion designer creates ideas for clothing & accessories, whereas a tailor/dressmaker makes, alters & repairs garments Both usually specific area, such as men's or woman's fashion, evening or casual wear.
