SCENE CENTRAL PERK MID-AFTERNOON, CHANDLER IS DRINKING A HOT BEVERAGE WHEN
MONICA WALKS IN.
Monica: Chandler!
Chandler: well if it isn't the one and only Monica Burke! (monica slightly winces at that comment)
What are you doing here on a friday night?
Mon: i haven't seen you in a month and you ask me that? Hug me!
Chan: (gets up, hugs her) its really great to see you.
Mon: same here.
Chan: please sit. (she does) you want something?
Mon: double latte
Chan: Gunther double latte and another coffee for me. (sits down) so really, whats a married woman
like yourself doing here?
Mon: Richard's out of town, and i didn't feel like being alone all weekend. Where is everyone?
Chan: Ross and Rach are doing a romantic weekend thing, Joey and Phoebe are on a date---not togther.
Mon: what about you?
Chan: my girlfriends outta town.
Mon: you have a girlfriend? (gets drink from gunther) thanks
Chan: (to gunther) thanks, well kinda. We've been on like 6 dates and she hasn't dumped me yet.
Mon: wow that's a record for you!
Chan: ha ha.
Mon: is she pretty?
Chan: surprisingly so
Mon: good for you!
Chan: enough about me. How's married life treating you?
Mon: (hesitates) its alright.
Chan: hm?
Mon: its good. (chandler notices her hesitation)
Chan: you seem unsure about it.
Mon: It's fine really.
Chan: you sure?
Mon: not really.
Chan: look if you're having problems you can talk to me, i mean i'm probably not as good as rachel
but i can listen. (monica is silently drinking her coffee) so how's married life?
Mon: not great. I just feel so.......
Chan: estatic? unfufilled?
Mon: empty! I mean this was my dream, meeting the right guy, getting married, having kids
and living happily ever after,
Chan: but....
Mon: it's boring! I mean all i do all day is watch TV, cook and clean! I can't visit the city because its
a bitch to commute, and the only person i see everyday is Richard!
Chan: no friends or neighbors out there?
Mon: no. All the neighbors are like a decade older than me, and they probably think i'm some trophy
wife or something.
Chan: thats ridiculous!
Mon: well, i heard them bad-mouthing me at a barbeque. I'd think the same if i were them.
Chan: I'm sorry Mon
Mon: I'd work but there are no decent restaurants in the area, and Richard makes enough to keep me from not working.
Chan: Is that all your problems? Maybe you can convince Richard to move back to the city!
Mon: Richard is part of the problem.
Chan: he is? (she nods) how?
Mon: I don't know, its like we're two different people now, or at least i am. Its a routine day in day out, We both wake up, i cook
him breakfast and kiss him goodbye, then i watch TV and a take a shower, clean the kitchen and the bathroom, watch more tv
get the mail, cook dinner, and wait for Richard to come home.
Chan: you do that everyday? (she nods)
Mon: and Richard doesn't even notice that i'm miserable! He thinks everything is fine!
Chan: you haven;t made an attempt to have a kid yet?
Mon: no, i'm not sure if i want richard to be the father of my child
Chan: what? Then why did you marry him?
Mon: i thought he was the one!
Chan: the what?
Mon: you know, my soulmate?
Chan: oh. (pause) how long have you felt like this?
Mon: since the day we got married!
Chan: oh my god!
Mon: (sighs) You know i thought my wedding day was going to be the happiest day of my life, and i guess it was, but i had to convince myself
that it was the best day of my life, like a part of me had doubts.
Chan: Those doubts still remain?
Mon: times 10. I thought my life sucked before i'd got married, now it sucks even more! (starts to cry)
Chan: (hugs her) oh Mon, don;t say that. Wanna catch a movie?
Mon: yea, that'd be great.
Chan: we can talk afterwards.
Mon: i'd like that. Thanks Chandler.
Chan: (paying Gunther) lets go.
SCENE ROSS AND RACHEL'S, CHANDLER AND MONICA WALK IN.
Mon: oh my god the mess! (starts to pick up things)
Chan: as you can see the apartment missed you.
Mon: i've missed it too, and you guys.
Chan: we we've missed you, and you're cooking.
Mon: i wish you guys would visit...
Chan: yea, i'm really sorry we all don't visit, its like you said, it a bitch to commute, an-
Mon: i know.
Chan: Have you talked to Richard about any of this?
Mon: no, i'm miserable, but i'm dropping hints whenever i can.
Chan: he doesn't notice?
Mon: no.
Chan: wow.
Mon: (sitting down) god ever since i was a kid i wanted to get married, it was my dream!
Chan: your dream was to get married?
Mon: to the perfect guy!
Chan: you didn't dream of becoming a movie star, or sports star, or star of any sort?
Mon: well i was fat and lonely, so i wanted something i couldn't have at the time.
Chan: wow.
Mon: what should i do?
Chan: get better dreams.
Mon: no really
Chan: about?
Mon: me!
Chan: Ok. (pauses) alright, do you want to spend the rest of your life with Richard?
Mon: (thinking) i don't know
Chan: hold on, let me rephrase, do you wanna stay with him the rest of his life, being he is so old!
Mon: (slapping his arm) hey he's not that old!
Chan: you still didn;t answer my question.
Mon: i answered! I don;t know!
Chan: alright, do you think you would be happier if you weren't married to richard? (she thinks) I don't know?
Mon: yea
Chan: Ok, are you happy in your current situation?
Mon: no!
Chan: how can it be improved?
Mon: (mad) how the hell should i know? If i did i do it!
Chan: if you answer those questions you might find out what you want to do.
Mon: (sighing) when did life become so difficult?
Chan: when you got married. (pauses) you didn;t think about any of this when you two got engaged?
Mon: i didn't expect to turn out like this.
Chan: still
Mon: I thought he was my soulmate!
Chan: Monica, um, he's been married for 20 years, he's got kids and grandchildren!
Mon: and.....
Chan: so you're telling me your soulmate is a 48 year old divorced man? When he got married the first time you were like 1.
Mon: so
Chan: so his first wife was a 20 year roadblock between the two of you becoming one?
Mon: i love him! or i loved, oh god i don't know.
Chan: (looking directly into her eyes) look, figure out what you want and if you want richard to be in your life or not, but you can't continue
like this. Its not fair to richard, and its not fair for yourself.
Mon: I know
Chan: Look i like Richard, and if you think its worth it, you should fix it, but if its not
then you should leave him.
Mon: (thinking) i just-
Chan: (cutting her off) give it time Mon, a big decision like this shouldn;t be made in haste. (getting up) i guess you can stay here tonight,
um its not my place, but i know Ross and Rachel won't mind.
Mon: yea. How come you give such great advice, but you can;t apply any of it to your own life?
Chan: I'm too lazy to work on myself, its easier to help someone else. Night Mon. (kisses her cheek)
Mon: night, and thanks.
CHANDLER SMILES AND WALKS OUT. MONICA SLUMPS OVER ON THE COUCH AND PUTS HER HEAD IN HER HANDS
Mon: what am i gonna do?
