What if Chevy made ARMY Jeeps?

I have always loved jeeps, Dad had a white 73 Cherokee with a 258 6 cyl 3 speed. It was really sweet. I had a Tonka Jeep that I used to beat the heck out of, but it held up! When I grow up I want a real one!
Well I've had 6 of em now, and just like the Tonka, they held up. Since my Dad, Brother and Sister died, I have realized life is short. I have always dreamed of having a Jeep like that old Tonka! They don't make em like that anymore, and even if they did, I couldn't afford one. So I'M GONNA BUILD IT MYSELF!
So Get Your Canteen and Mess kit out, Here Goes Number Seven.!
Couldn't find a solid CJ anywhere. They were either rust buckets or they wanted a fortune for it. So I had to comprimise. If I can find one that the body and frame is solid, I can fix just about anything else. So the search was on for one with a bad motor or tranny. No LUCK till.......EBAY!
I found this one on Ebay, It had a bad Transmission. It was only 7 miles away, came with an engine and tranny from a Grand Cherokee and a cherry picker to make the swap with.  The guy would deliver! This is what the Jeep looked like in it's heyday. It's coated with Yellow Liner Extreem inside and out  I BID AND WON!  Now it looks nice here, but after sitting outside under a tree and in the sun, IT WAS NASTY. All the dirt and sap from the tree was BAKED into it. No way to clean it. That's OK though, the Tonka was GREEN!
This is a Dodge Magnum 5.2 (318) powertrain that came with the Jeep. One heck of a motor. Now at first glance, you would think that this would be a great motor to stick in a Jeep. BUT, for starters, the thing is HUGE. It takes a 3" body lift to clear, and the worst part, it's waaaay too long. The driveshaft would be REALLY short, so you would need a shorter tranny setup, adapters for it, and several other issues that all add up to BIG MONEY! Parts for this engine are PRICEY! Plus the transfer case was a NP249 with the dreaded viscous coupling full time four wheel drive. Now it CAN be done, but for me to do this on a budget would have been impractical.  So since I have a few junk Chevy donor vehicles to scrounge from, I decided not to use this powertrain. I decided the thing to do was....CHEVY POWER!
I am way more familiar with Chevy's technology. I have lots of parts already and Chevy parts are cheap.
Plus a Chevy swap has been done so many times the web is full of info how to do it. Chevy V8! COOL!
