----------- BEWARE OF DOG: THE ULTIMATE NET NUISANCE EXTINGUISHING RESOURCE -----------

"Beware of the Dog" is a proz that allows a bannerless connection with many of the free
ISP actually available. It is possible that it could not work with all of them since
some servers now use fancy devices to check whether or not you have a banner on your
screen, but with a proper tweaking and the right settings, our engine can actually
handle the very large majority. Actually, it worked with EVERY ISP WE TRIED SO FAR.
However, we provide you a list of the free ISP that you should try first.

List of the free ISP you should use (Our proz is 100% proof with all of them):

-Netzero
-Bluelight
-FreeLane
-DotNow
-Juno
-FunCow
-3Web

Some of these have time limit restrictions, so it might be useful to register with a few.

If it doesn't work, chances are that the real problem is at 10" for the screen.

It will probably work with your local free ISP if you tweak it correctly but do not
bother us with these: WE ARE NOT A FUCKING CORPORATION NOR A CUSTOMER SUPPORT, you
are even lucky that I waste my evening doing this damn READ ME so KEEP READING!!...

------------- STEPS TO FOLLOW TO PROCEED TO A FREE BANNERLESS CONNECTION ------------

1- Download the Free ISP (Internet Service Provider) you want to use (to be sure, you can
stick to our list up there).

1.1- Install the Free ISP you downloaded.
1.2- Sign in with this Free ISP (as if you would use it normally).

2- Download "Beware of Dog" from http://elusivemasquerade.cjb.net/bewareofdog.exe
The first file (full version) includes everything you need. In case you want to
save time and you have MS Visual Studio	installed on your computer, the second file
 	should be enough.

2.1- Install "Beware of Dog" (bewareofdog.exe) this will install the program and
create shortcuts in the Start Menu.

3- Now the fun begins: how to have a free connection without banner:

3.1- To connect to the internet, start "Beware of Dog" from the Start Menu INSTEAD
		OF YOUR FREE ISP SHORTCUT.
3.2- Press "Connect" and you just save 20$ per month.
3.3- If it DOES work, go get yourself a 24 beer-pack damn it.
3.4- If is DOES NOT work for any reason (get an error such as "Invalid target
program") or you get disconnected after	a short while or whatever, it is no
big deal yet, just keep reading.

4- Commands:

4.1- "File" from the tile menu:
4.1.1- "Connect" (also appears as a button) will start your Free ISP
connection wizard in a "special mode" where you will be connected
			banner free.

4.1.2- "Exit" will shut down the proz. duh

4.2- "Free ISP" from the tile menu:
4.2.1- "Edit Defined ISP" will pop up a box where you can enter the details
about the ISP you want (see step 5).

4.2.2- "Set Default ISP" is used to set the default ISP you want to use in
			your current and future sessions.

4.3- "Options" from the tile menu:
4.3.1- "Activate the Screaming broccoli": If you check it, it will activate
the "Screaming broccoli" keep alive feature (see step 6).

4.3.2- "Auto-Connect on Launch": If you check it, the next time	you will
start "Beware of Dog", it will	automatically start your Free ISP.

4.3.3- "Start Browser on connect": If you check it, the default	browser
will be lauched once connected to the net.

4.3.4- "Add Desktop Shortcut": It adds a shorcut of "Beware of Dog"
			on your desktop.

		4.3.5- "Choose Net Detection":
"RAS Detection" is the improved way of detecting your connection,
just leave if checked by default. "REG Detection" is good but it works
only windows 9x, "DLL Detection" is our faithful v1.4 net detection
			device. Advice: don't touch.

4.3.6- "Add Masquerade Connection": Use your current settings of connection
with a particular ISP (the one you use more often) and create a
"Masquerade" connection on your control panel -> internet setting.
That connection once set by default (4.3.7) will now pop up Beware
of Dog by itself when you will need to connect to the internet from
any application (ex: when you start Netscape before connecting to
			the net for instance).

4.3.7- "Set Masquerade by Default": Read above (4.3.6).

4.4- "Help" from the tile menu:
4.4.1- "Read Me" will pop up this READ ME, so you can read it again and the
next time you will go through step 4.4.1, you will read and pop up
another one and so on and so forth (its like a recursive function
that you endlessly go through, it is a programmer's philosophical
fantasm that generally ends up in a stack overflow).

4.4.2- "About...": read this when you will have some time to waste.

4.5- The "All Seeing Eye": Link to the Elusive Masquerade website when clicked.

4.6- The "Connect" button: connects to the net (see step 4.1.1).

5- The "Edit Defined ISP" Window:
5.1- You can add the ISP you want using that feature. Once defined, each ISP you
own will be listed in a the big white window. To define a ISP, enter its
name, its path (you can even browse the path using the (...) button). Each
ISP you own can have their own independent settings (some ISP require a
higher connection delays or a keep alive (see the "Screaming broccoli" on
step 6) than others). After entering the connection delay, name and stuff
by pressing "Set", it will appear in the list. The other engines refers to
the banner killing engines we used in our previous versions but still here,
you should use the new engine unless BOD do not seems to work for a
particular ISP (In this case, except for Freelane and Netzero, you should
		try the Tracer engine first).

5.2- "Connection Delay": The connection delay refers to the time before actually
killing the banner in milliseconds. The connection delay is system and ISP
dependant. Default is set to 4000ms (4 seconds) whereas some other ISP such
as Netzero require a higher connection delay. Keep 4000ms for your point of
reference but refers to step 7.2 for problems. The right connection delay
can be achieved by trial and error.

6- The "Screaming broccoli" keep alive feature:
The Screaming broccoli is a little stand aside program that pings the server on a
regular interval of time so that it emulates a banner without actually screwing up
your bandwith (some server shut down the connection if they don't receive nothing
from you, this trick actually fools them by sending junk). The icon of the
Screaming broccoli will appear on your system tray when it is activated. From it, it
is also possible to disconnect (could be used as a connection manager). You can
also start the Screaming broccoli while you are already on the net (see step 4.3.1).

7- Troubleshooting & FAQ

7.1- If you get an error during the installation saying: "Access Denied" or "Access
Violation" on a .dll or .ocx file, it just means that you already have this
file. Therefore, just hit the "Ignore" button. A second box will then
appear asking if you want to continue even if there is an error, so hit
		"yes".

7.2- If you connect to the net and get kicked after 0-5	minutes, try playing with
the connection delay (see step 5.2). THIS IS SYSTEM AND ISP DEPENDANT. If
it is not solving the problem see step 7.8. Default is 4000ms (4 seconds).
(You can try incrementing or decrementing by 500ms).
Try to stay between 500ms and 12000ms.

Approximative example for the same ISP:
		Pentium 100 -> 4500
		Pentium III 700 -> 3500
Approximative example for the same computer:
		Juno -> 500
		Excite Free Lane -> 3500
		NetZero -> 12000

Anyway you got it, have fun now.
Other disconnecting possibilities are discussed in 7.5.

7.3- If the banner appears, your connection delay is probably way too high. Try a
connection delay of 0, if the banners doesn't appear increment the
connection delay until you don't get kicked and no banner is showing up
(see step 7.2). Else try the other engines see 5.1 and 7.8 or other Net
		Detection see 4.3.5 and 7.7.

7.4- If you get an email from your Free ISP (such as Netzero) that is telling you
that they are sorry to delete your account because of the not respect
of the terms of policies, download the lastest version of Beware of Dog
(see step 2) remove the ISP so that its take the new settings ("Free ISP"
menu -> "Edit Defined ISP.." -> Select the ISP entry -> click "Remove ISP"
button) or see step 5. If it doesn't solve the problem try 50 of connection
delay (see step 7.2) and in the last affort go see 7.11 & 7.12.

7.5- If you still get disconnected there is probably 2 main factor: 1st there is to
much mindless monkey on the same server you are on, so try another number
on your Free ISP dial-up program. 2nd if you get disconnected after a
certain period of inactivity the "disconnect on idle" option is probably
enabled	somewhere in the cheesy maze of Microshit Windows. The ambushed way
of disabling this goes as follows:

For Win ME: "Start Menu" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel" -> "Internet
Options" -> "Connections" Tab -> Select	"Your Free Isp" entry ->
"Settings..." -> "Properties" -> "Dialing" Tab -> Uncheck "Enabled idle
		disconnect".

For Win 95/98: "Start Menu" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel" -> "Internet
Options" -> "Connections" Tab -> Select "Your Free Isp" entry ->
"Settings..." -> "Advance" in the frame titled "Numerotion Option" ->
		Uncheck "Enabled idle disconnect".

Other place where you can get disconnected in Win 95/98:
"My Computer" -> "Dial-Up Netwoking" -> click the right	button on "Your
Free ISP" and hit "Properties" ->from the first tab ("General") hit
"Setting..." just below a box with your modem written in -> "Connections"
Tab -> Uncheck "Disconnect if the call is inactive for more than..."

Congratulation if you managed to go there the first time...
Instead of that nightmare, you can just once again activate the broccoli if
it is not already being used, this should do the trick.

7.6- If you get the "Invalid Target Program" message box:
Re-type the proper path of your Free ISP (see step 5.1)	or browse by
clicking on the "..." button at the right. The target is generally called
"FreeISP.exe" and is located in "c:\program files\FreeISPPath", if you
don't know the location of your Free ISP connection wizard, right click on
its Shortcut -> "Properties" -> "Shorcut" Tab -> in the text box at
the right of "Target:" you will find the path and the application of your
Free ISP, you can now simply copy-paste it.

7.7- If you connect to the net and "Beware of Dog" doesn't close itself and the
banner still appears it is most probably because "Beware of Dog" doesn't
detect your connection: try another "Net Detection" see step 4.3.3.

7.8- If the banner is still showing up or your computer just screw up, or you get
disconnected even after playing with the connection delay (see step 7.2)
		try another "Engine" see 5.1.

7.9- If you get a message box when starting "Beware of Dog" telling that you lack
an .ocx or .dll, install the full version (see step 2).

7.10- There is also another X factor who could cause problems such as being unable
to disconnect or other hazardeous and unstable behaviours. This
unpredictable factor is called "Windows 2000" and is made by Bill and his
worshippers so please don't bother us with Bill's bugs. However, you can
use the Screaming broccoli to disconnect (see step 6).

7.11- If you cannot make it work, we would like to suggest shooting yourself or ask
somebody to beat you with a crowbar but since this program could be used
with so many ISP, it is most likely that some ISP just couldn't work so
		try another one.

7.12- Before a suicide attempt, send us an e-mail with
"I am fucking clumsy" as subject (elusive_masquerade@hotmail.com).
