Herbal Medicines for children
Generally same medicine is used for children & adult for some symptoms. However its potency differs according to their age. Yet some herbal remedies are particularly suited for children and their reactions to illness, and these are indicated, with suggested uses, in the following pages.
Introduction
BALM
It is a gently relaxing remedy suitable for a wide variety of children's problems. Especially, for nervous indigestion and during the convalescent stage of illness. A tea from the fresh leaves is particularly pleasant to take and may be used cold in the summer.
CATMINT
Catmint is a good reliever for the child who suffers from frequent colds, blocked ears and sinus congestion, especially if there is some feverishness and perhaps a lack of appetite.
CHAMOMILE
Probably the first herb to think of for most digestive upsets, ranging from nausea through stomach pains and flatulence to mild diarrhea. It is particularly valuable for children who get upset when they are ill or react peevishly and crossly.
ELDERFLOWER
Childhood catarrh and sinusitis can often be relieved by Elderflower, especially if feeling feverish but not sweating very well, also if feeling quite cold, as it is a good temperature
Regulator.
GARLIC
Only for those (probably older) children who can tolerate it. If the child suffers from frequent respiratory, or perhaps digestive infections then regular use of garlic can be very helpful in building resistance and easing nasal congestion or catarrh. Probably the pearls, at a low dose, will be the most convenient to take.
HYSSOP
For coughs, colds or influenza, especially if the child is unable to sleep or gets agitated by the symptoms. It relaxes the airways and helps in the removal of sticky phlegm whilst gently calming overall.
LIME BLOSSOM
Another mild relaxant, easing pain and discomfort and applicable for many childhood diseases, from headaches to colds/flu to stomach upsets. It will help to induce a restful sleep, aiding recovery from illness.
PEPPERMINT
A valuable antispasmodic for colicky pains, flatulence and other symptoms of digestive disorder. It is good for children who have over-eaten. Also helpful in chill influenza when shivering is followed by hot, restless feelings.
Other herbal medicines discussed in this book can also be of considerable value in particular ailments. In all situations when treating children REMEMBER  to adjust the dosage. And if symptoms persist or get worse, consult a qualified practitioner or your doctor.
